Le Petit Train Jaune

Le Petit Train Jaune

The famous “Petit Train Jaune”  was a remarkable feat of engineering when it opened in 1910 and today it still operates with the original carriages, over 100 years old!

The train runs all year round and was built to provide a lifeline for the remote villages of the Cerdagne – now it also serves as a fantastic mode of transport for tourists and winter sports enthusiasts wanting to reach the higher ground.  It departs from Villefranche de Conflent, just 5 miles away from La Châtaigneraie, and travels 39 miles to the Spanish border at Latour de Carol.

The track twists up the Têt Valley taking in some dramatic scenery as it passes over viaducts, through tunnels and over the suspension bridge of Pont Gisclard.  There are some great places to explore along the way, including the UNESCO world heritage site of Mont Luis, the fantastic sports resort of Font Romeu and the highest railway station in France (1593m) at Bolquère.

The train is painted n the traditional yellow and red of the Catalan flag.
