Proof we made it to the summit of Mount Canigou!
Welcome to the beautiful Languedoc region of the South of France.
We took the plunge and left behind the rat-race to embark on an adventure at La Châtaigneraie in Spring 2012. Since then there has been no looking back and and as you are reading this website, we are busy making sure everything is ready to offer you a fabulous holiday.
La Châtaigneraie means sweet chestnut grove. The Rotja Valley is a wonderful mixture of Spain and France with all signposts written in both French and Catalan. You may well hear Sahorre being called by its Catalan name of Saorra.
As you drive up from Perpignan, the famous Mount Canigou rises majestically in the background. It is the sacred mountain of the Catalans and one of the highest peaks in the Pyrénées, dominating the landscape throughout this area. You will pass through miles of picturesque vineyards along with orchards of peaches, apricots, kiwis and cherries, to name but a few. The Rotja Valley is most famous for its apples and in our garden we have figs, grapes, olives, cherries, loquats and probably all sorts of other things we haven’t even discovered yet!
The area feels peaceful and tranquil with fantastic mountain views, but you will never feel remote or cut off. The local bistro, Restauarant de la Mine, is a beautiful 10 minute walk along a track through orchards and across the river Rotja. We also have a delivery from a local boulangerie every morning, so you can have your freshly baked croissants and baguettes delivered to your door in time for breakfast!
The town of Vernet les Bains is 1.6 miles, or a half-hour walk by road. You can also get there by walking up and over the ridge which may take you a little longer, but is worth the effort for the stunning views you will enjoy at each bend in the track.
