The roads in France are generally excellent and driving is a pleasure (once you have mastered the wrong side of the road of course!)
In order to get the most out of your holiday and to be able to visit the many wonderful sights we would recommend that most people would be better of having a car when staying at La Châtaigneraie. However, it is not essential and several people have enjoyed holidays here without their own transport. There are a couple of shops and a restaurant within walking distance and a two mile cycle will get you to the local market, shops and restaurants in Vernet les Bains.
The local euro bus links all the local villages with Prades and Perpignan for just one euro per trip and is a great way to explore for the more adventurous.
We have found that the basic car hire charge is often cheaper in Spain when flying into Girona, however, be warned, there is an additional insurance charge of around €7.00 per day for bringing a car over the border into France.
Most car hire companies ask for the car to be returned with a full tank, so make sure you allow time to do this before you get back to the airport.
